Breezin’ Chats Episode 19: Re-Building One Step at a Time (Feat. Stay in Step)

On this episode of Breezin’ Chats, Cindy Dervech and her executive team, Jessie Soplinski and Michael Dervech talk with featured guest, Romy and Gaby Camargo of Stay in Step Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center. The team covers about the Charity and Romy’s road to recovery, a look inside the program and classes, this year’s Gala event, and what’s to come in the future for Stay in Step. So please give a warm welcome to Romy and Gaby. Living with a neurological injury is a challenge in itself, but that doesn’t stop Romulo “Romy” Camargo from living his life to the fullest. Stay in Step Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center is an organization founded by husband and wife Romy and Gabriela Camargo that begun in June of 2015. This recovery center provides critical physical therapy services to victims of neurological injuries. Despite its importance, unfortunately healthcare providers do not provide these recovery centers. But the hardworking couple made it their goal to make this happen for the Tampa Bay area. In 2008, Romy was injured in combat during his service in the Afghanistan tour, which caused him to be paralyzed from the neck down. Romy’s life changed completely, but the couple faced the long-term challenge to recover together. From this tragic experience, they felt the need to advocate for those who suffer from neurological injuries like Romy. Stay in Step is a unique program that Romy and Gaby built together from the ground up. The process was difficult due to the descending rates of Medicare and Medicaid, but the organization was still able to receive investments from healthcare.   Stay in Step has the patience for those in recovery, unlike other healthcare providers. Each client is treated with the utmost respect and is never forgotten or left behind during their recovery. They can get as far as they possibly can in the process. Unfortunately, other healthcare providers do not have the same service. Because the couple has been living the same reality as their clients, they fully understand the challenges their clients face every day. Breezin’ Chats Episode 15: Making Life More Musical (Feat. Instruments 4 Life)

On this episode of Breezin’ Chats, the team is talking with featured guests, David Diaz, Bri Brokaw, and Jon Soler, to discuss their united mission to make life more musical for the Tampa Bay youth through Instruments 4 Life. David and Jon are native residents to Tampa, and Bri has a background in world travel. Together they share a strong passion for music and community outreach that is making kids lives better each day. David, one of the founding members, has most enjoyed the journey of seeing Instruments 4 Life come together after years of hard work and seeing the kids grow with the program. Jon, a local musician and founding member, calls the organization a family that uplifts each other. He believes this powerful quality gives Instruments 4 Life a competitive advantage against lots of factors. Bri originally came into the program to assist with fundraising, but after a break in which she worked for the Peace Corps and became a teacher abroad, she brought the skills she learned back to Instruments 4 Life and continued to grow the program to what it is today.   The idea of Instruments 4 Life came to fruition at a band practice eight years ago. The band was brainstorming ideas on how they could help local kids, and, being musicians, they decided to practice what they already know; music. The band agreed that even for those who aren’t musicians, music helps people get through difficult times. As Bri said, “The best way we know how to give back is to start with our youth… because they are our future.” Thus, Instruments 4 Life was born.   The program provides beginner and intermediate lessons in guitar, ukulele, piano, and arts for kids in second through twelfth grade. It runs in eight to ten-week increments that coincide with school semesters and quarters. Following the completion of a cycle of music, the students are awarded their own instruments to keep.   The ultimate goal is to create lasting, positive changes in the lives of youth in at-risk communities. Instruments 4 Life students come from schools that have either no music programs or the existing programs have been severely cut. As a result of their hard work and commitment to the kids, Instruments 4 Life was named the Breezin’ Entertainment 2019 Charity of the Year. Tune in to Breezin’ Chats to hear more about David, Bri, and Jon’s passion for musical outreach and how Instruments 4 Life is continuously improving the lives of children in the Tampa Bay community. Breezin’ Chats Episode 14: The Runway to Tampa’s Future (Feat. Danny Cooper)

On this episode of Breezin’ Chats, the team is talking with featured guest, Danny Cooper, to answer the question, “What is flying people to the Tampa Bay area?” Danny is a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and currently works as the Senior Manager of Marketing at Tampa International Airport. Danny is a proud Florida native. Following his graduation at Kathleen High School in Lakeland, he attended college at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina on a full-ride scholarship from the U.S. Air Force. Danny began his collegiate years as a computer science major with pilot training as the end goal, but ended up graduating in 1997 with a degree in English Literature and working as a Public Affairs officer at the MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Following his work in the Air Force, Danny worked as the Assistant Vice President of Communication and Public Relations at Lanier Upshaw and later as the Associate Director of the University of South Florida Alumni Association. He most enjoyed reconnecting alumni to a university that is completely different from when they visited and working outside the Tampa market.   Danny recalls a vivid memory of thinking that working at a university or airport someday would be cool, and the later half of that dream came true not long after the first. In 2014, he began work at the Tampa International Airport while also attending The University of Tampa to obtain his MBA. Danny works with the mindset that the airport should never be the reason people don’t come to the market, and has had undeniable success in ensuring the airport provides the best experience for its visitors.   The team comments how he has come full-circle doing work in the aerospace field, and Danny encourages any interested listeners to get into the field sooner in their career than he did. He believes that if you put into the universe what you want, it will happen.   Tune in to Breezin’ Chats to hear more about Danny’s career, his insight on marketing, expansions, and improvements at Tampa International, and where the future of Tampa Bay is headed.   Breezin’ Entertainment launched a spin-off podcast series, called Breezin’ Chats.
