Breezin’ Chats – Episode 7: Married to Marketing (Feat. Anna Coats)

On this episode of Breezin’ Chats, we are featuring Anna Coats, who is a finalist from Breezin’ Magazine’s “40 under 40.” She has appeared in several national talk shows like Daytime TV, ABC action news, News Channel 8, and Fox 13. With over fourteen years of marketing experience, she was a finalist for the Tampa Bay Business Journal and named Businesswoman of the Year. However, her major success in serving the Tampa Bay community was achieved through various, unplanned, and unanticipated experiences. So please give a warm welcome to Founder and CEO of Marry Me Tampa Bay, Anna Coats.

She grew up in Kentucky and attended Western Kentucky University where she studied news, journalism, and marketing. After school, she spent a year as a financial advisor and worked for an SAT prep company where she taught students on the side. She also helped the company with their operations and marketing for eight to nine years, which made her want to pursue marketing even more. She then received an opportunity to do marketing for Whole Foods Market.

At this time, she was planning her own wedding and realized that there were not many local resources for finding wedding vendors and planning weddings. This was the time when she decided to combine her journalism and marketing background and start her own online wedding publication. She did not think this could be possible, but she quit marketing for Whole Foods to pursue her passion, which is now known as Marry Me Tampa Bay. The publication features real weddings in the Tampa Bay, Lakeland, and Sarasota area, advice from local wedding professionals, and more.

However, Whitney didn’t want to settle and made it an effort to put herself out there and got a job at ESPN straight out of college. After working at ESPN for two years, Whitney transferred and worked at the MLB in New York for two years. Whitney says during her time working at the MLB, she faced some challenges but knew it was going to be worth it in the end. Living in NY, Whitney heard about VaynerMedia and Gary Vaynerchuk and felt like it was the perfect place for her, so she emailed him right away and got the job. Throughout her career, Whitney has always put herself out there and gave her all to achieve her dreams.

Whitney says she has learned that some of the best opportunities come from dead ends and hard times. She knows that it is important to work hard and to take any chance you can get. Whitney took a leap of faith to open her own company and has been thriving ever since.

Know What You Can Afford

When planning an event, there’s a lot of pressure added to finding the right guest speaker. You, the event coordinator, have many things to consider and keep in mind. However, those who are so wrapped up in finding the right speaker might forget about how much money they can spend or have.

Therefore, when choosing the right person for your event, make sure you know what you can afford before saying yes to anyone. Here are some ways to choose a great guest speaker without breaking the bank or your spending budget.

Stay On Budget
Again, when planning an event, it’s important to remember the small stuff, but it is very important that you remember your budget. Considering, the event wouldn’t happen without money anyways. This means you must know exactly what your spending limits are for everything, especially, guest speakers. And although it would be nice to pick whomever you want to present at the show, keep in mind that even the smallest of names have the biggest of price tags.

Search For Local Celebrities
Popular celebrities as guest speakers will surely attract a big crowd to your event, but high profile speakers aren’t always the best option, especially when you have a budget. So, another way to stay within your price range would be to hire guest speakers like University professors or small business owners. They have the same knowledge and expertise. Also, they are like local celebrities around your town.

Call The Professionals
Another way to save money would be to call around agencies. This can help you save money by getting an idea or sense of the going rate for a high-quality speaker. Also, making these inquiries will give you a better idea of how much you could be spending or how much you could be saving.

No More Volunteers
Lastly, gone are the days when people used to volunteer as a guest speaker for fun. No more freebies because it takes time, effort, and experience to deliver a good speech or presentation and people want compensation, not just a pat on the back. So now that nothing comes for free, you have to spend your money wisely.

It is important to watch how you spend your money when creating and planning an event. It is also important to watch how much you spend on the main entertainment. By following these tips, you can be sure that you won’t overspend on any guest speaker, ever again.

How To Find A Speaker For Your Event

Planning an event that calls for a guest speaker can be stressful. There’s creating the budget, finding the venue, and finding the right guest speaker. This is because you want your guests to engage with your speaker. Most importantly you want someone who will interest the audience. But it doesn’t have to be because there are so many resources you can use to find one. Here are a couple of ways to choose someone who will match your event and be enjoyed by your guests.

Search Through Your LinkedIn Contacts
LinkedIn is the most popular online networking website. It’s good for many things, including finding the best candidate for the event to speak at. This is because it is full of business professionals who are more than willing to share their experiences with the world.

Therefore, begin reviewing your contacts, if any, and choose someone who will match your event. Or search throughout the site for speakers around the area. The only stress-free thing about this is, it will be easy to get in touch with them.

Use the National Speakers Association Website
Another way you can find the right guest speaker for your event is by using the National Speakers Association website. It is a website dedicated to professional speakers. This organization specializes in training people to become professional speakers. Most importantly, it can connect you with professionals who are exceptional public speakers.

Speaker Match
One more website you can use is Speaker Match. It’s another website dedicated to professional speakers. This site allows you to post an ad requesting a speaker for your upcoming event. Most importantly, this site has about a thousand of professional speakers you can choose from. They also have online profiles that you can review or contact them with.

Check Your Local University
Lastly, another good resource is asking your local university. These institutions have guest speakers visit all the time, and so they should be in good contact with them. Just asking the person who coordinates all the events for some contacts will help you find the right person for the event.

Moreover, college professors can make for good guest speakers, too. I mean, it’s their job to get in front of people and talk. They are also very knowledgeable, and with so many subjects to study, you can find a professor in any field.

When choosing a guest speaker for your event, it’s important to pick someone who will interest your audience. Therefore, by using these websites and places that have experienced guest speakers, your event will be worthwhile.
